Farmer Tom’s Natural Garden Mulch Safety Data Sheet

What is mulch?

Mulch is a layer of material that is spread over the surface of soil as a covering. Mulch has many benefits and is used to retain moisture, suppress weeds and add nutrients to the soil.

What does mulch do?

There are three main benefits of mulch – the suppression of weeds, the retention of water and the nutrients it provides the soil. Mulch inhibits the growth of weeds by depriving them of the sunlight they need to grow and by preventing them from coming into contact with the bare soil they need to germinate. Mulch reduces the rate of evaporation, allowing soil to conserve and retain more water, keeping your plants healthy and saving you water. Mulch also keeps soil cooler in hot weather, which helps to prolong the blooming period of your plants.  As mulch breaks down, it adds nutrients and organic matter to the soil. The added nutrients from the mulch makes your soil much healthier which therefore results in much higher quality plants.
